techy.Bytes - January 2007

I figure a quick filler post can’t do too much harm.

I think it is about time the US takes serious measures in preventing people with shady backgrounds from running for office in any level of government. The security of the country, and as such, the rest of the planet is compromised because of it. Thank god for Fox News, reporting what the rest of the corrupt liberal media refuses to.

Why don’t they have shows like this on Australian TV? Oh that’s right, THEY censored CANCELLED THE LAST ONE! Bleh, thank god for American liberal TV.

Oh, heres what I'm talking about (since you no doubt are confused right now):

I love Fox News, but I’m not a conservative, bleh, I’m not a liberal either, I’m a cube (long story).

Very well sums everything up, could have said more, but comedy is all about keeping it short and sweet, not to spoil the audience and all.

Contrary to popular opinion that a price cut for the Playstation 3 would do good for Sony in terms of Playstation 3 units sold it has instead raised the price.

Canadians will be paying an extra $40 for their Playstation 3’s bringing the price to $700.

I don’t recall a time ever in console history where the price of a console has actually gone up, and certainly never has the most expensive console in history shot up in price.

Wii-Remote, Real Time Robotic Control

January 26th 2007 15:58
The Wii-Remote uses Bluetooth as its communications interface allowing the actual Wii-Remote to be compatible with any Bluetooth receiver.

As such it has paved the way for new and innovative designs on the PC. But now it is being taken to the next level, the Wii-Remote has been made to control a robotic arm in near real time.

People talk about Wii Remotes being flung from their hands, this thing could impale you, talk about taking it to the extreme.

This is just too good to be true (and it is true), Sony is using Microsoft’s Project Gotham Racing 3 press packet to advertise their own racing game, Gran Turismo HD! Featuring on the PSP Connect website you see the top banner is actually a screenshot taken right out of ‘Project Gotham Racing 3’ here.

Here’s a screenshot of the website featuring the offending image (the yellow exotic car) so that if they remove it (which they will) people can still see

In the Australian Open this year something was given to players never before given to them, the ability to officially challenge calls made on the tennis courts.

Players can challenge verdicts where their shots are called out, or that of their opponent is called as in by the lines people or umpire. They get two incorrect chances at it per set, so long as they are correct and their challenges are upheld they can keep challenging

Nintendo Taunting the Contest

January 23rd 2007 11:25
This was a pretty funny segment on Nintendo Power about Sega and Sony trying to get the heads up on Nintendo’s Triple-A title ‘Star Fox’. While Nintendo might not have dominated that console generation, or the subsequent one with the terrible GameCube, Nintendo really did a good job with first class titles, the greatest game of all time (as voted by the people) came out on the Nintendo 64, ‘Zelda: Ocarina of Time’.

Nintendo learned a lot from this show, it learned that secret’s should be kept secret, after the rumble pack was revealed it was promptly copied by Sony. Well at least Nintendo left the wii-remote secret until the very last minute, so Sony could not do a full blown copy, instead it just put in a half arsed tilt function in the Playstation 3 controller, not enough time for all the finer points of the Wii Remote

Blogg-Buzzing to Boring Stories World

January 19th 2007 15:29
I was at first excited about the concept behind Blogg-Buzz yet weary that it might turn into a Digg clone with nothing but what they call on Digg as ‘blog spam’ heaven.

While the submissions are exhibiting similar traits to Digg it looks like the bigger problem Blogg-Buzz is facing is that the community of bloggers it has mustered seems to have lost the plot some way down the line re-posting stories from sites such as Digg and submitting too many stories related directly to blogging

After reaching a peak in 2006 the Pirate Bay has begun to steadily decline in popularity as Mininova has started gaining rank and surpassing the Pirate Bay. This can no doubt be attributed to Mininova’s cleaner interface, English words and heavier moderating of the site, such as quickly removing misleading content.

Coupled with the comfort of not having the MPAA after its arse and the fact it is not planning on skipping the country it looks like Mininova will eventually dominate over all other

This has got to be the best iteration of a Shockwave Flash based table tennis game ever. The whole game revolves around the mouse, it is pretty much pick up and play, you can even shoot curve shots if you so wish. It doesn’t cover the full spectrum of table tennis moves, quite the opposite in fact, but it is extremely addictive. You’ll be playing like a pro within a minute of picking this game up.

I have discovered about fanboys, well not fanboys, but the mentality fanboys carry.

It’s called justification, they justify failings in the items they are infatuated with and think that is enough reason to ignore its failings. Take the Playstation 3, they rationalize its failures and think it is a justification, they state that it has a built in Blu-Ray player hence the price is justified, they rationalize that it was only recently released justifying its lacklustre titles compared to the Xbox 360

It was eight days since the last one which is made on the Sunday of Australia, this next one is coming and it is the Sunday of other parts of the globe so technically this isn’t a delay, simply an adjustment. I’ll be alternating from here on in I guess...

So the biggest thing that happened in the last week for the blogosphere would have to be the introduction of Blogg-Buzz. Essentially a Digg.com equivalent for blogs and nothing but blogs it should help out given the amount of cracking down Digg has been doing on its democratic dictatorship in which it has blocked out URLs that correspond to blogs written by, say, one person and/or not affiliated with any major news distributing chain. So much for giving the user the right to choose what they like and what they don’t

That's right, HD-DVD has now completely trumped critics who claimed that HD-DVD had ‘insufficient’ storage for HD movies (which is in fact incorrect), with a triple layer 51 gigabyte monster, ousting Blu-Ray’s 50 gigabytes

Wii to get Ana-like HD?

January 7th 2007 06:51
Ana is a chip in the Xbox 360 that up/down scales games in HD irrespective of what output those games give. The benefit visually of an up-scaled game isn’t as great as that of a game running natively at a higher resolution, however up scaling still makes the visuals look better than if it were running on a lower resolution.

Technically speaking giving the Wii HD capabilities without any hardware enhancements to the console would be the worst decision Nintendo could make. Put simply the Wii does not have the number crunching power to run a game at a HD resolution that will look any good, an upped resolution does not make a game look much better, especially when the higher resolution is at a cost to the actual in-game visuals
