Sony Puhes Blu-Ray in Australia

December 28th 2007 07:20

Sony has begun an aggressive marketting campaign through Video-EZ and Blockbuster to 'educate' consumers on the benefits of Blu-Ray.

As Blu-ray hardware enters Australian homes, Sony companies are collaborating with the country’s two leading movie rental chains to educate consumers on the high definition home entertainment format. The Video Ezy and BLOCKBUSTER® networks will be making it a ‘Blu summer’ as they roll-out a number of initiatives designed to help customers experience the exceptional sound and image quality Blu-ray can offer.

The partnerships include an increased quantity of Blu-ray films for customers to choose from in both rental networks, in-store displays featuring PLAYSTATION®3, Sony’s S300 Blu-ray players and BRAVIA full high definition TVs, as well as educational content. These stands will be delivered to over 200 Video Ezy and BLOCKBUSTER stores across Australia. Video Ezy will drive a promotional campaign across TV, radio, direct mail, catalogues, mobile and online mediums, while BLOCKBUSTER will promote the format through its print and online channels.

“It’s without question that Blu-ray is the format of the future,” said Michele Garra, Managing Director of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. “Both the hardware and software trends are tracking significantly towards Blu-ray in the adoption of high definition in the home. Working closely with our partners in the rental space – a significant channel for home movie consumption in Australia – we’re committed to providing a strong education focus, particularly in-store. The Sony group is in a unique position to demonstrate the strength of the format across the full gamut of content – movies, music and games.”

"BLOCKBUSTER – with over 8,000 stores in 24 countries – recently announced that we are extending the portfolio of Blu-ray titles we will offer our rental customers purchasing only this HD format for the foreseeable future following the lead from the US,” John McKay, Head of Product for BLOCKBUSTER in Australia. “We made this decision in order to meet the demands of our customers and based on trend data we're seeing both here and internationally, while ensuring they’re educated and understand the possibilities of HD. We believe the customer will dictate which high definition format will become the industry standard as the format matures in the Australian marketplace and we will be supporting them in their decision.”

One has to wonder what the hell happened to the folks up at Toshiba, where the hell is HD-DVDs? I'm starting to think its dying in a gutter somewhere, Sony keeps pushing Blu-Ray and the DVD alliance have yet to really respond.

GPS/Radar Hybrids

GPS/Radar Hybrid

Uniden is getting ready to unveil its GPS/Radar hybrid for CES. For now virtually nothing is known about these new fangled gadgets but if they are what I think they are they could be used to locate speed cameras and cops, and possibly rogue kangaroos.

Uniden hasn't been long in the GPS game, but its experience in high-end radar detectors goes back years and years. So it's no surprise that, come CES, it will be the first company to introduce a MapTrax GPS navigator with radar detection built in. We don't know much about them yet, like how the radar detection might be represented on a map, or if detection could help mark speed traps on the screen, but damn if it's not a start. People who note the placement of portable GPS navigators have asked me for years about this—"Why can't it have a 'fuzz buster' so I can see where all the cops are?" Well Dad, guess what? You're gonna get your wish.

Twentieth Century Fox and Apple have signed a deal to allow Apple to lease newly released DVDs through downloads via iTunes. No news on the pricing but its expected to be around $2.99 per download.

The exact details of the deal will probably be announced during Macworld or maybe just some random spontaneous Apple news conference. Steve Jobs hasn't done one of those in a while

150" Plasmas Right 'Round the Corner

December 27th 2007 06:59
The biggest Plasma TVs in the world are currently built by Sharp, they measure in at 108". Well it looks like Panasonic wants to change all that and is getting ready to unveil its 150" displays. Apparently the price of this whopper is expected to, and I quote, 'greatly exceed the 103" model'. Oh well, guess I'll stick to my trust 15.4" laptop display for now.

Apple Continues War Against Blogs

December 23rd 2007 10:28
Who said Apple was into all the hip stuff? When it involves something as incriminating as rumours or comments about Apple's behaviour or even comment on matters as a self confessed 'fake' Apple employee and (*gasp*) Apple attacks. Now famous Steve Jobs impersonator 'Fake Steve Jobs' is being threatened by the Apple legal team.

Apple Shuts Down Blog

Apple Sues Think Secret
Apple has reached a confidential agreement with popular Mac Rumour website 'Think Secret' of which one of the conditions is the aforementioned website shuts down. Apparently Apple doesn't like the idea of blogs talking about their products before they are released. It seems to be ok though that there are dozens of analysts who do the same.

Apple and Think Secret have settled their lawsuit, reaching an agreement that results in a positive solution for both sides. As part of the confidential settlement, no sources were revealed and Think Secret will no longer be published. Nick Ciarelli, Think Secret's publisher, said "I'm pleased to have reached this amicable settlement, and will now be able to move forward with my college studies and broader journalistic pursuits."
