Being a Geek Sucks
April 26th 2007 15:07
Let me just get one thing straight, theres a difference between being a geek and being a hobbyist, if you're interested in movies or even 'Dungeons and Dragons' you're cool, if you're unhealthily obsessed then you're a geek, you're unsocial, you're pathetic.
There is no positive for being a geek no matter how you spin it.
You can be a good person and not a geek, in fact it is easier to not be obsessed with any one aspect of your life in an unhealthy manner and be a good person, you can be a well meaning and perfectly normal person with a passive interest in D&
(Dungeons and Dragons), you don't have to be sweaty, smelly and obsessed with D&
so that you can be a polite person.
While I can appreciate having a passion for a subject there is a limit where passion crosses over to obsession, obsession is not a nice thing, it is not something to be proud about, there is not a single case in existence where obsession could at all be social, or at the very least be considered social. Lets face it, an obsession for cars is no better than an obsession for D&
, the fact those obsessed with cars tend to have the slicker hair and leather jackets is just raw coincidence, it could have run either way.
So how would you define one or the other? If you put aside a daily part of your life, such as eating or drinking, going to the bathroom, taking a shower, going out or if you put aside your social life in any number of ways due to a passion or specific subject interest that is supposedly for leisure then you are in fact anti-social, pathetic and weak. It's a hard truth, not saying it isn't.
Maybe it's just the little decent moral guy in me, the one that makes me feel ashamed of myself for staying up late blogging (*blushes*) but I don't find appeal in photographs such as this:

The whole concept of equal treatment should start with men wearing netted whatever the hell they call those. Though to the point, is it really that cool from a geeks perspective that some women play games? Is it really that big a secret? I don't understand, perhaps less do, but not that much less and the only reason it looks like women don't play games at all is because geeks like to pretend they don't play games because they're just not that into it, and use that line of thought as an escape goat from having to deal with what they would call regular, 'inferior' people.
Everyones inferior from a geeks perspective especially at the subject matter the geek revels in, it's pathetic and stupid, it's so many kinds of wrongs rolled into one.
Then again, most stereotyped characters tend to be assholes, it's just a surprise that there are millions of setereo typed assholes fluttering about. I do kind of wish 'geek' could be used as a compliment of sorts but it can't because it has been tarnished by certain assholes, certain assholes that make up the primary demographic that is known as geek. I don't know about you, but I don't want to be labeled alongside fat, smelly pizza eating self righteous jerks.

girlwoman, just kitted out like a whore and holding a Zelda cartridge, seems to make all the difference for a geek.Comment by yoda76

So just stop short of eating nothing but pizza and neglecting to shower and you're not a geek but you can be smart and passionate too...
