Britain: The Prison State

November 2nd 2006 11:31
Remember that movie ‘Johnny English’, where a crazy bad guy Frenchman wanted to turn the UK into the largest prison in the world? Looks like his dream has finally been fulfilled, if not in a slightly more subtle way than one might first assume.

Big Brother
The British are the most spied upon people in the world, which is on its own alarming news. Were not talking about Stalin Russia or post apocalyptic future of the US of A, we are talking about the 2006 Britain.

Doesn’t end there though, Britain also has the largest collection of human DNA samples stored in its DNA databases. The purpose of this DNA bank was originally to store the DNA of all convicted criminals. However it has spiralled out of control with any and everyone who is arrested having his or her DNA taken away for storage, innocent or guilty.

What surprises me most however is that most Brit’s don’t mind it, or at least have shown that they pretty much welcome losing rights for increased security (so-called). The majority of British citizens are for instance willing to give up civil liberties to be safer.

There will be a new poll going around Britain now to just understand what the public opinion is on DNA storage, however if the majorities past inclinations are anything to judge how they will react to the new polling, we can safely assume Britain may be the first country in history to have every one of its citizens DNA taken into storage.

Ahmed,

It's bad enough that this is going on, it's worse that the people are accepting it.

true that, what I don't understand is why the brit's don't care, it makes no sense. They actually WANT it to happen to them.

Good post and good points. We'll support this and get it up there where it belongs.

I'm sorry spain01, it is really early in the morning for me (5am) so I am kind of dull headed right now. Exactly what do you mean by get it up where it belongs?

Well, I am a bit sceptical of these civil liberties are under attack thingy! Those who fear civil liberties are under severe strain first should describe a coherent security policy and then criticise

Good Post.
Iremember someone writing in an essay about Orwell that there are always people who find the responsibility of freedom so painful that would give it up willingly.

I meant among popular posts where this issue should be exposed but I have not got back to it in time and I suspect that now it is sinking into oblivion.

I don't mean to point fingers, but this kind of reminds me of something a democrat senator said about george bush legalising torture in the US.

'I can'tbelieve the nation turned its back against this development and instead watched 'dancing with the starts' [sig].

basically he said that he couldn't believe that people didn't care.

Hey Ahmed, so you haven't mentioned what you mind about being spied upon.

What's wrong with trading privacy for safety?

If you've got nothing to hide, why be concerned?

Because it is the first step to a totalitarian state. It will cease to be looking for the bad guy and will turn into accusing this person or that person. Giving the government absoloute control over people sucks. You want to be told how to think, behave and talk? Of course you don't, but this kind of spying forces people into a certain stream of the aforementioned because they fear, justifiably might I add, being accused of something. Sure, it hasn't reached that level yet, but name one country where there is a lot of gestapo businesss going around and tell me it isn't a totalitarian state.

If you don't mind it, go to stalin russia, or Saddams Iraq, you have nothing to hide, whats the matter?
