But HD-DVD has all the Cool Movies...

Historically speaking it is always the technologically inferior format that has won out. Take the VHS VS Betamax, VHS claimed victory despite Betamax being superior in just about everyway imaginable from a technological standpoint. It had better picture quality; the tapes were smaller, it also was the tape for the first portable video recorder.
Yet VHS won out, why? Well because the porn industry kind of decided to back it up... but that's besides the point here. I mean sure, Hollywood movie this or that, but the Porn industry is way too huge, and produces far more movies than ‘mainstream’ Hollywood, so that decision was probably the deciding factor.
Right now it appears Blu-Ray has the support of the pornography industry, so there's one hurdle from the past solved.
Technologically Blu-Ray is by far superior to HD-DVD, it has a greater storage space it is a brand new tech (not based off DVD) and has far more industry backing especially from the likes of NEC and Apple Computers.
Blu-Ray also has the support of the vast majority of mainstream Hollywood studios including Sony Pictures (including MGM/Columbia TriStar), Disney (including Touchstone, Miramax), Fox, Paramount, Warner and Lions Gate.
HD-DVD has Paramount, Studio Canal, Universal, Warner and the Weinstein Company backing it.
That's ten for Blu-Ray five for HD-DVD. So clearly Blu-Ray will be getting more exclusive movie content goodness.
But just one thing, HD-DVD has all the cool movies! The ones I like, the ones I watch, ‘Serenity’ and ‘Batman Begins’ among quite a few others. On the other hand Blu-Ray does have some great titles such as ‘Lord of War’ and ‘XXX’... ok, I kid, ‘XXX’ is NOT a great title. Honestly there really aren’t enough great Blu-Ray exclusive titles to swing me its way, it can have all the technology in the world but it has lost focus on the core thing, that I want my movie!
Interesting to point out also there already are more titles available on HD-DVD than Blu-Ray, which being an entirely new technology is finding it hard to get off its feet. Despite having more studio backing Blu-Ray has less choice than HD-DVD.
Ok, so this is now, what about in the future? I think the only soon to be announced Blu-Ray title anyone would be interested in (i.e. a ‘killer movie’) would be ‘Terminator 4’, which probably won’t even have Arnie in it, on the other hand HD-DVD has the potential to nab Wignut Films’ ‘Halo 3’ (assuming it is made), also the ‘Batman Begins’ sequel ‘The Dark Knight’ will probably be HD-DVD exclusive...
HD-DVD also has exceedingly good chances to nab ‘The Hobbit’ as its own exclusive, not to mention nicking the ‘Lord of the Rings’ series and Wignut Films’ entire back catalogue which includes ‘The Frighteners’
Sadly older movies (pre HD-DVD/Blu-Ray) probably won’t really benefit too much from their new found HD partners so they shouldn’t sway your decisions. They might, not saying it is out of the question, but as it stands on a commercial level it hasn’t been seen yet.

Film & TV on DVD
I have read a lot on both sides for the HD vs Blue Ray debate. I cant afford either yet and dont have the components to make it worth my while.
When i do though in a few years there should be a clear winner, or at least one with the films I seek.
I must say that i agree with what you say, Blue Ray is definetly superior, but as you said Betamax lost. So who knows.
