Dealing With People on the Internet 101
February 17th 2007 07:02
When it sounds exaggerated it probably is exaggerated. Never go to a conservative asking them to prove their sensationalistic ideas about global warming through science as you wouldn’t go to the Pope asking about Taoism.
If there is a group smearing another group don’t take the word of the attacking group, often times they lie with fabricated stories or even photographs. Go to the group that is being smeared and find out what validity (if any) the attacking group has.
Some people are trolls, don’t feed them with logic because they’ll only spit it back out in your face. You can’t reason with trolls, so don’t bother. They come in few and far in between but they tend to have the loudest voices. You can spot a troll by their sensationalism and their history of sensationalistic ideals.
Liberals are easier to get along with than conservatives. Regardless of your political persuasion, if you are not an extremist right-winger you can get along with a liberal just fine. However if you are at all a liberal, even not so much of one, or you even consider yourself neutral you cannot get along with an extremist right-winger. I know this is probably true in real life as well as online, but it’s still a fair lesson learned.
Don’t ever take anything to heart while you communicate with other people online. This is for a variety of reasons. One of the more obvious ones is because you may get angry and start feeding the troll (read above). It is in vein, believe me it’s in vein. Another reason is that text can often be misunderstood; the tone of your voice does not go through text so misunderstandings are rife.
There are idiots in this world, dumber than you could possibly imagine. Just let them be, don’t sink to their level by trying to give them helpful advice or reason with them. This is the hardest part about the internet, meeting such people.
When was the last time you heard a person in the street yelling out something that conflicts extremely with your beliefs simply because of deliberate misinterpretations and as such vilifies you, or is ignorant to the point of annoyance? Hardly ever right? That’s exactly true, those people are few and very far in between, just let them express their views through the Internet and ignore them.
The pen might be mightier than the sword but the pen is a metaphor here and that metaphor is not a computer and an internet connection.
*The reason this article was posted in the politics section is because it is very much about politics on the internet more so than it is inherently about the internet.
