Free Water

November 1st 2006 16:03
Ever heard of ‘free energy’? Well as much as the developed world would love something that is impossible to create, not to mention has no place in the current political world, it cannot want it, or desire it as much as third world countries loves and desires clean fresh drinking water, something they can drink that doesn’t taste horrid, and that won’t make them sick.

Before you feel guilty about the fact that one in five people don't have access to safe drinking water and reach into your pockets to dig up a few bucks for World Vision, I would like to point out it’s not about throwing money at it, or digging wells, the solution to this problem is far simpler than that. The answer to this problem exists, and it is surprisingly cheap and efficient.

John Ward, who invented the machine, says his inspiration came after visiting Zimbabwe and seeing the damage polluted water caused to people drinking it. His inventions name is as simple as not only its purpose, to provide clean drinking water to third world countries, but also its design, it’s called the ‘Solar Water Purifier’.

Diagram
Diagram of the Solar Water Purifier
So how does it work? Without going into too much detail it uses the heat provided from the sun to evaporate water which is caught on its own leaving the ‘dirty stuff’ behind.

While it could be used anywhere in the world, particularly countries with drought, right now it is being focused on third world countries where it is needed most. Rotary Australia is spearheading this little project, which will one day hopefully expand beyond third world country aid and take on an actual market that will pay dividends to the inventor.

For its purpose the Solar Water Purifier works perfectly, low maintenance, simple design, cheap construction unlimited power source and most importantly, efficiency in its task makes it perhaps one of the most innovative yet simple machines to have come about in quite some time.

To find out more you can visit the Solar Water Purifier website or check out the New Inventors webpage.

You could always find Mr. Ward and ask him for one. THey are cheap to build...

I love its concept becuase it has a ridiculously simple design and it really, really is needed throughout the planet. WHy the man is not a multimillionaire right now amazes me. I mean, he's pretty much solved one of the worlds biggest problems, if only someone picked it up for mass production or something... hopefully intime it will find its place...

It just goes to show that most of our most serious problems have simple solutions. It's just a matter of doing them and getting the materials to the people who need them.

More importantly it goes to show that there are no real obstacles on the planet that are the cause of why people are hungry and thirsty, its all that no one cares, or everyones too greedy.

Ahmed,

You have good themes and always express yourself very clearly, it's good to see such clarity of thought and such a pure mind. You are keeping us very well informed.

Just goes to show that innovation is a practical thing. Let's hope they get enough of these out there to the places that need them.

Ahmed,

Great Post!

How great is this invention - simple and wonderful - and like all the clean stuff, virtually free to run.

Education is they key and you have triumphed here today, Ahmed.

Bravo!

Lilla...

PS I loved the 'Digg' video - how is that (connexion) done?

You can make this yourself! I read a HOWTO on making one for when you're trapped at sea.

You use a pot with seawater, and a smaller pot inside it. The top is sealed with saran wrap or some other transparent plastic, and the center is weighted down with a rock or something suitable.

As the water evaporates, it condenses, moves to the center and falls in the smaller pot. Ingenious!

Thanks Katyzzz, that was purely my aim here actually, I went out of my way to shorten the length of this entry so people would actually read it.

postmoderncritic, as nice as the idea may be, I fear Rotary Australia doesn't really stand much of a chance of doing it.

Sorry Harmony Rocks I didn't mean to offend you or anything, when your senses are slightly dulled like mine after sleep deprivation you tend to lose a bit of your sensitive touch.

Digg video? Sorry I don't understand what you mean. Umm, do you mean the picture? Kind of complicated actually, I'll be sure to write another post on using Digg and that digg buton and all.

Cibby, when I'm the captain of SS. Techy Bytes which will obviously start sinking at some point (I dunno much abotu boats), I'll be sure to grab a couple of pots and glad wrap while I'm at it.

I know you're tired and you hardly seem to need them but if you separate out to individual replies - you can use the same contents-, you'll collect more votes, generally by this stage two each.

Come to think of it, I don't understand why it isn't law already to stick one of those buggers on your roof, it rains, the device catches the rain, and feeds it to your drinking water, sure it might not be that big of a difference, it still will be.

I heard of a similar (though less advanced) one which involved baking a clay bowl with coffee grounds mixed into the clay. They burn off, leaving the clay very finely pourous, and suitable for filtering water to a fairly safe degree.

Comment by Ahmed

November 3rd 2006 06:22
well the advantage of this is you don't heat or doing anything, just pour dirty water in.

It distils water almost, if not, perfectly, I doubt you can get the same effect using a clay ball.

Comment by Jay

November 3rd 2006 08:37
This is basically just distillation, but using the sun instead of a Bunsen burner - clever stuff!

Comment by Ahmed

November 3rd 2006 08:39
Exactly, pretty bloody clever that it only uses the sun as its power source...

Comment by Jay

November 3rd 2006 08:43
One of my mates at university did his fourth year project on the same kind of thing (water filtration for third-world countries) though they used some funky membrane to filter the water instead of distillation. I think the distillation idea is much cleverer...

well simplicity rules in engineering, so I hope he got a much desereved FAIL for that little project of his (j/k).

How far did it get? Is it being implemented now or was it just for the sake of the degree?

Comment by Jay

November 3rd 2006 09:40
He didn't fail - he got a 2.i like me - a drinkers degree!

I think it was just for the sake of the degree, but I'm not sure. I haven't heard his name in the headlines so I'm guessing it wasn't ground-breaking...

Comment by Ahmed

November 3rd 2006 10:27
whats a 2?

Well the solar water purifier is quite ground breaking and no one kows of its existence...

Comment by Jay

November 3rd 2006 10:35
That's how they rank degrees over in the UK. You have first class (1), second class first division (2.i or 2.1), second class second division (2.ii or 2.2), third (3) and fail. I think they just like to make it sound clever, when actually it's not really very clever at all!

Yeah good luck to the inventor and most importantly those who use it...
