Google’s Suicide?

October 4th 2006 13:55
Kills itself and is reborn, at least that might happen. Google have recently (and inconspicuously) launched ‘SearchMash’, if you notice ‘SearchMash’ has nothing Googly about it except maybe its inherent simplicity which it shares with Google.

MishMash
SearchMash, could end up being Google's self prescribed downfall

So what is ‘SearchMash’? Simply the latest crazy stunt Google is pulling off in the super fast, super charged world of Information Technology. The idea is that it is for research, they put new features on SearchMash continuously and see if people like it, if they do they may integrate it into Google some way down the line, or not. Point in case however is that SearchMash WILL have more features than Google while still providing the same Google powered search, just without the Google name anywhere to be seen, literally. On first inspection you'd never know, Google is not mentioned once, even the obligatory 'Ads by Google' ads are missing!

But really, why no evidence of it being affiliated with Google? Since people will see Google and (obviously) say ‘gee, whatever is Google must be good quality’ so Google, in an effort to not let its untarnished most glorious name corrupt the minds of Internet Surfers they have created SearchMash, as both a place of research for Google and still a great search engine with a bit of extra wiz to it than Google’s flagship search engine for the average net user.

Certainly the interface is what you’d call ‘next-generational’ the fact it completely lacks buttons to click on for ‘search’, instead you have to press enter, you are given a dynamically updated prompt telling you what to do which definitely helps.

It comes with a myriad of features, and you are cleverly asked which you like and which you don’t, all in the name of research.

Perhaps SearchMash will be the end of Google? Who knows, lots of high tech features, even if experimental while keeping a ridiculously slick interface may one day replace the term ‘Google it’ or ‘Do a Google search’ with ‘Mash it’ or ‘Do a Mish Mash’.

The results come from an older google data center (that seldom matters in the real world) so for competative keywords the rankings will be a week or so behind.

Also, if you visit privacy policy, it directs you to google's page and mentions their affiliation.

Also, while Google's suicide is a catchy title the body text isn't about that. At the very least put a question mark behind suicide?. It's the difference between interesting (catchy and fun) and deceptive (spam) word choice, in my opinion.

I know, but people need to be catchy, however I did mention how the new search engine could turn into comeptition for googles flagship one

It was essentially the conclusion:

"Perhaps SearchMash will be the end of Google? Who knows, lots of high tech features, even if experimental while keeping a ridiculously slick interface may one day replace the term ‘Google it’ or ‘Do a Google search’ with ‘Mash it’ or ‘Do a Mish Mash’."

Yeah have to admit I didn't look around THATAMUCH.. I'll update it.

Have you seen the cell phone video of Paris flashing her crotch at Hyde last week? I think I'm about done with watching that stuff!

"Perhaps SearchMash will be the end of Google?"

Sif mate. No chance.

It's obviously purely a tool where they can do two things at once. Research new features without impacting their current site, and distance themselves from any backlash that could result from a bad choice.

probably so. My idea is though if it keeps having extra features like it already does it could quite possibly unwittingly end up competing with google's flagship search engine.

Just for the record, and I am holding all you as witnesses, the term 'do a mish mash' was created by me, so should SearchMash somehow (as impossible as it may be) take over Google's flagship search engine and the term 'do a google' is in fact replaced with 'do a mish mash' then know I was the creator

I think Ahmed it would end up like Google's code search. They will add it in their long list of experimental API.

Seems to me that a company with Google's rep would have considered a quick suicide, rather than slowly disemboweling itself in front of God and everybody. I gotta figure they know their big picture.

Oh yeah. And congrats on coming up with 'do a mish mash'.

I'm down with Google putting out its experimental stuff for us to see ahead of time!

I am not sure how soon Google will die when SearchMash provides a more reliable result. But in a way, it is sooooo simple that you feel rather weird looking at it. More or less the logo design is a little too "robotic".

Nevertheless I ran through a search and showing some images as a result at the right side is a good idea rather than some useless advertisements (that link you to another search engine result in another site).

Well, you don't have a button, so what? People are so used to "type and press Enter" on textboxes that it has become a norm to many surfers and researchers.

So lets just see how far this "new kid on the search block" is going to last.

If it does take over googles flagship search engine it owuld be something that would be beyond googles own anticipation, but it hardly will be googles own downfall as I so dramtically put. It would though probably be gogoles 'google' search engines end, but odds of it happening are very low.

I don't think google stands to lose a thing - if search mash takes over then hurrah - it was the winner - the google owners are still raking in the same cash - I think it would take a heck of a lot to destroy such a strong brand as google...and if anything was going to take that over I thought it would have HAD to have been gizoogle...no really!

Great post though - I am going to suss it out - I have to hand it to them it is a genius research tool.

Google will rule the world.

Here's a cool Google easter egg:

type miserable failure on the google search bar, then click IM FEELING LUCKY

Comment by Ahmed

October 7th 2006 13:38
I think I should mention that the 'I'm feeling lucky' button simply gives the first (unsponsored) result google comes up with.

Miserable Failures first result just happens to be about what it is.

Excellent post, I didn't realise Google had launched Searchmash. Why do I get the feeling that their grasp on the web is just getting tighter?? After a quick glance on the search engine I felt that they’ve kept true to their image of simplicity and originality. The images on the right hand side provides a less commercial feel while the organic results down the centre are awesome, allowing the user to continuously navigate through the results without having to deal with pages of content and the over use of the ‘Back’ button.

Is in it funny how a week or two after Microsoft went live with ‘Live’, Google responds with the launch of Searchmash?? The war of the search engines is alive and well but the question remains weather any player has the brute strength to deal with the giant we know as ‘Google’.

Well I dont think SearchMash is to compete with MSN Live, however in a way if it does end up ebing more popular tan MSN live google really will show its market dominance

Comment by incognito

October 8th 2006 08:53
That may be true, but Live has been launched to counter Google's dominance of the search engine market.

Well whats wierd is the first result you get if you type in 'search' in google/SearchMash the first result you get is for msn live search. So google is actually helping msn live in a big way.

I hate to say it but so far msn live has given this blog more hits than google, but if you combine all the googles (au, hk, ca etc) it is slightly more than msn live.

Then again, typing 'playstation 3 price' gives you this blog as the second result so I suppose it helps in that regard.
