Imagine you have this terrible itch that won't go away, one thats driving you nuts, yet your hands are preoccupied trying to kill the mosquito that inflicted you with that itch. For Sony, the fly is the Playstation 3s poor sales and scratching the itch is getting a good game for the system.

To that end it's no surprise that after shipping off their best bet for a real 'killer app' to retail stores Sony have adopted a... generous marketting strategy, that is 'release the damn game as soon as you have it in stock, don't wait for the release date'.

As frequent Playstation.Blog readers will remember, about two weeks back we announced Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction had gone gold and would ship to stores Oct 30th. Well, due to some unexpected quickness at the factory, a vast majority of retailers have already received the game. With that, some retailers are choosing to release the game next week instead of waiting until the 30th, which we are all too happy to allow .

Factory quickness my ass, Sony just needs to get a good game out to sell some actual hardware, one that can't come soon enough. Ratchet and Clank is no less than the light at the end of Sony's tunnel, at least for now.

Nintendo Wii’s are Impossible to Find

February 17th 2007 11:35
They are impossible to find, literally impossible, I don’t even see them around, just empty display boxes.

Dick Smith, a popular electronics retailer here in Australia (don’t laugh, they once sold a brand of matches they called ‘DICKHEAD’) which has over 130 stores in Australia have not a single Wii, well they do, they have two or less at one of their stores, that’s it.

One of the biggest electronic retailers in Australia has two or less in stock in the entire country, and no, they are not withholding stock. Australia isn’t exactly the worlds largest video game market, but damn well if you can sell out a console like this you know you’re doing something right.

At Electronic Boutique (now GameStop in America) I overheard the store manager responding to a customer about ‘Wii Points’ and if they were selling it, ‘technically we are, practically we sold out in half an hour last week’ (sic).

In other news they had plenty of Wii games in stock, lots of them, so at least you know if you can get that little white box you can at least choose from a large variety of Wii games.

Crucified?

December 23rd 2006 08:16
I don’t know what the equivalent to crucifying a video game console or any electronic brand would be but when they come few and far in between and lack demand you can expect the internet to come up with many and varied examples of it being crucified.

Woot.com has found a particularly creative and excessively insulting way, the picture speaks for itself.

Well it was a long time coming, you must be happy it didn't work the other way around then?

Sony Cops a Whopper

December 14th 2006 06:50
Sony, particularly SCE has a habit of inane advertising that makes no sense. From crazy nonsensical TV advertisements for the Playstation 3 to potentially racist billboard ads (I don’t agree, seems to be too much reading *into* here), Sony has it all.

So what is the latest effort? Well Sony desperate to sell the failing PSP inconspicuously launched alliwantforxmasisapsp.com. Oh bravo Sony! That's about as obvious as a rhino in a china shop! Talk about viral marketing, you bring it to new lows

Playstation 3 price slashed!

September 22nd 2006 05:53
After the news of the Playstation 3 retailing in Australian markets for $1000 AUD and overseas for something around $600 US and Microsoft’s recent unveilings at the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) which represents Sony’s core market in Japan it seems Sony has finally bit the bullet and cut down the price of the Playstation 3’s launch... in Japan at least (well it’s a start!).

Recently Microsoft went on a full blown assault at the TGS to ram the Xbox 360 down the Japanese markets throat. Microsoft has definitely not had the best of luck in Japan up until now being outsold by everything from the GameCube to the Playstation 2 to the Game and Watch (if it were still on sale
