How To Treat Your Soldiers (and their wives)

February 20th 2007 03:32
So much for terrorism being a threat to freedom, a the wife of a man who is on his third tour of duty in Iraq and mother of three children has received two years in prison for throwing a cup. A cup!

From the article

And like the name, the details of it spill forth like a bad joke: A woman is driving north on Interstate 95. Three kids squirm in the back seat, and her sister, six months pregnant and having early contractions, sits in the front. The stress starts to simmer. Traffic slows, then crawls, then creeps. More stress. A car cuts in front of her, then scoots away. A short time later, it darts in again. She can no longer take it. She veers onto the shoulder and speeds up. Wham! She tosses a large McDonald's cup filled with ice into the other car.

Hall, a mother of three young children whose husband is serving his third tour in Iraq, has spent more than a month in jail.
The jury sentenced her to two years in prison, the minimum, and a judge will formally impose a sentence Wednesday. Under state law, the judge can only decrease the jury's sentence.

Black War Wife
Is it Just Me, Or Does the Fact She's Black have anything to do with it?

While conservative types trumpet the contributions of soldiers to freedom they like to ignore the fact the country they are in discriminates and punishes people far more harshly than any terrorist.

Heck, there’s more, war veterans are not allowed to attend ceremonies if they would rather wear shorts than pants for the sake of convenience are treated quite harshly too.

This was brought to you buy the wowza category here on techy.Bytes, where the crap of the internet and the fun of tech is merged into one wholesome fun-loving package with a dose of conservative bashing politics to boot..

i agree in this instance: 2 years for throwing a cup is a disgusting perversion of justice.

However, in principle I'm gonna have to disagree. Just because she's a soldier's wife, doesn't mean she should get special treatment. All people should be judged equally, that's one of the freedoms the soldiers are fighting so hard to protect.

Did the article say if the thrown ice caused an injury - tif the ice shattered on impact or did the driver refuse to settle out of court or have an accident caused by swerving when the ice was thrown?

Or is American Law just wierd?

I agree with that Mark, it's just a highlight, she has no history of crime and is married to an outstanding man, should none of that add up to justify this one off instance of anger?

Well Julie there was ice however no accident occurred, just a report. The accuser himself was shocked at the two year sentence and even hinted should he have known she'd go to prison for two years he wouldn't have told anyone.

The reason she was given two years was because she behaved dangerously and it could have caused damage. Typical in the US, where if someone 'accidently' dies due to heavy assault it can be downgraded from murder to manslaughter, but if you throw something you are put in prison for what *might* have happened.

While what she did was foolish and dangerous, I think two years is too harsh.

Disgusting and revolting.

Celebrities can drive drunk, get caught STEALING from fancy department stores and all types of things, and get a slap on the wrist.

Yet, this poor woman who has been doing it all alone for so long, who lays in bed at night worrying about her husbands safety, who just trying to keep it together for the kids, and who to add insult to injury, is probably struggling to make ends meet throws a cup while her sister has early contractions next to her, and she gets TWO YEARS?!?

It makes me want to vomit.
