Hydrogen Power, what are you afraid of you coward?

September 10th 2006 03:08
Hubble Telescop picture
That gas you see there is hydrogen. One tiny portion of that image is several planet Earths big!
Hydrogen can be a viable alternative to regular fossil fuels. It is not a question of ‘if’, it’s a question of ‘when’. Hydrogen is the most abundant gas in the universe however consequently it’s also very difficult to harvest on its own. Up in the expanses of space you can find it by the bazillion load unfortunately those isolated pockets of Hydrogen are way too far out.

At the University of Queensland scientists were (and hopefully still are) working on splitting water, since it contains Hydrogen and Oxygen, by splitting it the yield is both Oxygen gas and Hydrogen gas. It isn’t really about if it can be done but more about how much the government is willing to spend to fund this research.

If success is reached then Australia will become a global leader in renewable energy, the best part is that there is virtually no competition, most other countries aren’t even thinking about it. If we can develop this technology we could literally start making billions of dollars by exporting the technology, with fuel prices increasing the way they are it will reach a point were there will have to be an alternative found, there is no excuse to not make Hydrogen power, or at least feasible alternative fuels a priority.

Right now the development of technology in regards to Hydrogen is developing somewhat erratically with bits and oc=maz0310282" target="_blank">pieces of technology popping up here and there. While on there own they look like great breakthroughs and most certainly they are, they are still only random and erratic. We need to have a long term plan set down.

Buring Zepplin
This happened many years ago, it's time we moved on.
I know there are fears behind hydrogen because of this one random and sporadic event in history were a blimp blew up. I doubt people are so scared of that happening anymore, truth is while hydrogen does burn heaps better than regular fuel it doesn’t mean it will randomly explode. Put it in the right environment and I doubt it will be any more dangerous than regular fuel. Because of its efficient burning it means we get more bang for the buck on top of that the only pollution it produces, get this, the only pollution it produces is water! That’s it! Nothing else whatsoever. It hardly is pollution that we know of. The best part is WE NEED RAIN, and this ‘pollution’ will create rain for us! Kill two birds with one massive stone.

The catch is we need to find an effective way of harvesting this hydrogen, and then we need to put them in hydrogen fuel cells. I reckon given its energy production pay off even if we used conventional means such as fossil fuels to harvest this hydrogen the pay off in energy will be better than what is used to harvest the hydrogen. However I think we can one up that and try and use the power of the sun to do it as what researches at the University of Queensland are trying to do.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell
The technology for a hydrogen fuel cell exists, all we need is the hydrogen.

While I don’t want to sound like a crazy conspiracy theorist and all I think one of the main reasons why we are not getting very with research on effectively harvesting hydrogen for our hydrogen fuel cells is because of… Oil Companies DUN DUN DUUUUUN….. They seem to be lobbying the governments against funding for these types of things because they will have a lot to lose on it.

That’s not stopping some people though, right here in good old Australia (in Perth no less) they are trialing hydrogen powered busses! The future looks to be bright, but we have to make it happen.
