In defence of the Playstation 3

Its Sony’s fault the Playstation 3 looks like it is failing.
Sony has been cocky about the number of Playstation 3’s that will be sold by year’s end, first their prediction was somewhere around four million, it then dropped to one million.
There was controversy it would reach one million due to production shortages but then Sony stated that production problems had been solved and they were on track to sell one million, now Sony has bumped the sales numbers up to two million.
Though they probably won’t break the one million number, much less two million before 2006, I doubt there will be two million Playstation 3 units in existence until a few weeks into 2007.
It doesn’t end there, the hype surrounding the Playstation 3 is continually dropping, for instance on eBay they are barely scraping in profits, sometimes they are selling at a loss.
Traditionally hard-to-get hardware sells for exceedingly high prices on eBay, often times more than double purchasing cost. People expected the Playstation 3 to sell upwards of $2000 on eBay after release, however that isn’t holding true anymore.
Will Sony even sell two million units? Heck, let’s say every store had fifty Playstation 3 consoles, would they sell out? Well it looks like the hype is dwindling down and available consoles is burgeoning, the answer to that is apparently no.
Hype surrounding the console is dying, this could be blamed squarely on Sony for making everyone think that the Playstation 3 is so exclusive that it will be on the top of the most wanted list for weeks, nay, months to come.
Like they did with all the pre-rendered ‘gameplay’ demonstrations of the console in action Sony made it look like this thing was the be all end all, the final nail in the coffin, something that will not simply supersede the Playstation 2 but will completely stomp it into history and break the records already set by the Playstation 2.
Truth is people aren’t that interested in the console, heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony didn’t know that already, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has generated a huge following of its own and the Wii continues to be the media darling the Playstation 2 used to dream about.
When it comes down to it all the Playstation 3 is not going to be as successful as the Playstation 2, the market has grown, Microsoft has learned from its mistakes, Nintendo has completely shaken the industry, the Playstation brand has lost its dominant name simply because it has become diluted from maturer competition.
Sony is to blame, they defined success and set their sites too high simply to create hype, but hype is a balloon, they over filled it, now it exploded.

In two to three years the xbox 360 and Wii with all there 'short comings' is going to have one hell of a market lead over the playstation 3.
Dwhat do you mean by future proof? HOw is the playstation 3 future proof unlike the xbox 360? CELL Processor? RSX? Oh wow, so future proof indeed. So anything that doesn't have either is obviously not future proof.
Same thing was said about the xbox 'oh give it two or three years and the short comings of the ps2 will be apparent'.
Truth of the matter is the Playstation 3 might get discontinued before it even reaches its third year,, it is bumbling along as the xbox 360 and Wii sell solidly.
Ther already is a HD-DVD addon fort he xbox 360 and there are plans to integrate it into the actula console chassis sometime when it becomes pheasible.
