Wii-Remote, Real Time Robotic Control

January 26th 2007 15:58
The Wii-Remote uses Bluetooth as its communications interface allowing the actual Wii-Remote to be compatible with any Bluetooth receiver.

As such it has paved the way for new and innovative designs on the PC. But now it is being taken to the next level, the Wii-Remote has been made to control a robotic arm in near real time.

People talk about Wii Remotes being flung from their hands, this thing could impale you, talk about taking it to the extreme.

Magic Mag-net-ic

January 6th 2007 14:02

I have no idea what practical uses this has but it does look like a bit of fun. It could be used as jewellery if magnets are a turn on for anyone. No it won’t try to attract metals so long as every magnet on that bracelet is linked up so there's no chance it could get annoying as a bracelet.

Suddenly I’m interested in magnets, heres an excerpt about them from wikipedia:

is an object that has a magnetic field. It can be in the form of a permanent magnet or an electromagnet. Permanent magnets do not rely upon outside influences to generate their field. They occur naturally in some rocks, but can also be manufactured. Electromagnets rely upon electric current to generate a magnetic field - when the current increases, so does the field.
Magnets are attracted to, or repelled by, other materials. A material that is strongly attracted to a magnet is said to have a high permeability. Examples of materials with very high permeability include iron and steel. Liquid oxygen is an example of something with a low permeability, and it is only weakly attracted to a magnetic field. Water has such a low permeability that it is actually slightly repelled by magnetic fields. Everything has a measurable permeability: people, gases, and even the vacuum of outer space.

Magnetic forces are like gravitation forces, they don’t travel, they exist. I don’t care what Einstein said about gravity travelling at the speed of light. He, quite frankly, was incorrect... goodbye.

Spray On Clothing

January 6th 2007 11:37
Fabrican is a spray created by Manel Torres can that sprays on clothing, it does this by spraying many layers of fibre onto a surface after which the fibres latch onto themselves and form the piece of fabric around the object.

From the website:

"The fabric is flexible enough to deliver product of varying characteristics to suit the needs of the fashion industry, or the automotive industry, or cleansing companies. It is as soft as silk for some uses, or tough as hemp for others. It can be applied to hard and soft surfaces and it is as durable as needs be."

So far on Fabrican’s official website suggested applications of fabrican would be in hygiene products, medical applications, fashion and industrial applications.

I think they forget it could be used as a patch for torn clothing especially in canned form if you tear your clothes at odd ends you can quickly patch it up.

For those who are so curious: Heres a picture of it

Self Cleaning Underwear

January 6th 2007 10:26
Boffins working at the US air force have created ‘self cleaning fabric’ that has been put to good use with underwear.

The only industry that could benefit more from the underwear manufacturers would be the sports underwear manufacturers. It’s that big a discovery

Lego Record Player

The site of these two people with too much time on their hands reminds me of Homer Simpson shouting out ‘NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERDS !’, however these two deserve a bit of credit for creating what they have.

Optimus Keyboard
The Optimus Keyboard (concept picture)
The Optimus keyboard looks amazing, it is the kind of thing geeks like me dream about. It is also one of those things that we know will be ridiculously expensive without much advantage over tried and true concepts.

Each individual key on the Optimus keyboard is a digital screen which displays an image, this image could be the letters of the alphabet or shortcut key’s for any individual software application

Flight of a Winged Robot

December 17th 2006 11:07
This is probably the first ever remote controlled robot that flies by flapping wings. Pretty cool, though as the video shows it sure doesn’t fly very well...

Real Life Mech

November 2nd 2006 12:11
A mech is basically a vehicle on legs. Impossible to create? Well thus far, yes, very impossible.

More of a science fiction concept that is best known and recognized in sci-fi movies such as Star Wars (i.e. the ATST), or in videogames such as ‘Mech Warrior’ among many others

Free Water

November 1st 2006 16:03
Ever heard of ‘free energy’? Well as much as the developed world would love something that is impossible to create, not to mention has no place in the current political world, it cannot want it, or desire it as much as third world countries loves and desires clean fresh drinking water, something they can drink that doesn’t taste horrid, and that won’t make them sick.

Before you feel guilty about the fact that one in five people don't have access to safe drinking water and reach into your pockets to dig up a few bucks for World Vision, I would like to point out it’s not about throwing money at it, or digging wells, the solution to this problem is far simpler than that. The answer to this problem exists, and it is surprisingly cheap and efficient
