Internet Libraries

November 6th 2006 12:32
One day the internet may replace libraries.

Google is perhaps the leader in the field of digitalizing books and putting them on their search engine Google Book Search. Another company in the loop doing this is Questia

The books are scanned into Google’s/Questia's database and made available to search for by the public.

While not all books are allowed to be downloaded or accessed in their full, you can find where you can purchase them or borrow them from a library.

Libraries may soon start replacing their search software with this, if Google can include the database of them all, or custom tailor the software for specific libraries, finding books you wanted would be infinitely easier.

I still like the feel of a hard copy in my hands, but it is so nice to be able to search inside.

yup, that is where it has a really good use. You are looking for a book on something but can't find it, you simply search it through googles book search and you'll find what you are looking for. Very efficient.

I can remember how much book case space used to be taken up with encyclopedias...

LAD, I wish I was that old, but alas I was born into an era when encyclopedias took up 2 cds. Then it became 3, 4, 5 as the years went on, now its back down to one... dvd that is...

Amazing how we have an entire encyclopedia, with images, sounds and movies that fit on a DVD/CD which on its own is like 50 pages from an encyclopedia thick and about 1/3rd its length.

What google is doing is taking it to the next step with normal books, maybe we'll see a dvd collection being released that contains every book in googles database sometime in the future..

It is amazing.

And great way to make me feel ancient, Ahmed!

Heh, just for the record I wish I was ancient like

Can't imagine wading through those books for one thing, nowadays you just mishmash it and you have it...

Sorry, but Google is in no way the leader in this field - they are just the most public, mainly because their methods are not really 100% legal. Questia (www.questia.com) is an excellent online library, so much so that I no longer go to the library for sources to use in my essays - I just use questia, since they have so much available.

Hey Jimbo, to be honest I think Google's methods are quite respectable. They do it at no charge to the library and most importantly I think is they don't force the library to sign any contracts preventing them from allowing any competition to do the same.

Well, in terms of raw popularity they are definately the biggest, and knowing google, if they arent the leader this week, they sure as hell will be the next (I smell a questia buy out in the works if they really are the leader).
