It’s hip to be geek
September 14th 2006 11:50
Yup, it is. No, it is, and I bet you’re a geek too. I’m not basic that on the fact you like to read from an online blog written by a geek named ‘Techy Bytes’, but rather on the fact, you, the reader, probably own an mp3 player.
Or not, you might own a Nintendo DS, or use the PC like you breathe, and probably need it as much as the air around you. This is the state we are in right now ladies and gentlemen. We are geeks. We have our iPods, and our Nintendo DS’ which outsell other items, these things, these things are geeky. An iPod is a portable hard drive, a Nintendo DS is a portable game machine.
You can rip music off a CD and transfer it to your iPod super easy, the reason why Sony’s Universal Media Disk failed is because people like you could rip DVD movies and put them on your PSP’s, Sony underestimated you, the consumer, and paid dearly for it. Sony turned you into a geek with the PSP, so did Apple with the iPod, so did Nintendo with their excessively hip handheld, the Nintendo DS.
It’s not just me, or you the treasured reader who frequents an online blog written by a geek called “Techy Bytes” who are geeky. We have politicians getting into trouble for listening to their iPods in parliament house!
I suppose this is a side effect of the technological media revolution, people are more and more buying into technology as an entertainment media rather than as something that only makes their lives slightly easier here or there. The consumer because of this openness and acceptance is more and more realizing that this technology is very flexible, you can do more with it than the manufacturers are willing to say. For instance Sony really didn’t want people to start ripping movies off DVD’s to watch on their PSP’s, they wanted and thought the consumer would go and buy the UMD’s movies for the PSP, oh how wrong they were! How they underestimated us.
But these companies know that if it’s one thing geeks are good at, it’s breaking the rules set down for them. They have created these geeks, and now are paying the price for it. VIVA LA REVOLUTION!
