Linux Based iPhone-esque Mobile
February 16th 2007 08:11
The Neo1973 is the product of the OpenMoko project, it really is no more than an iPhone copycat using Linux as its operating system.
Technically the Neo1973 will be the first ever open-source mobile phone, that is, it will be fee.
To truly qualify as ‘free’ OpenMoko runs on a variant of the Linux operating system, its technical specifications are fully open and anyone with a bit of technical wiz can mess with the software without restriction.
What this means is unlike the iPhone that is restricted in the applications you can use, the Neo1973 will run software any basement programmer makes for it.
Another big, big advantage of the Neo1973 is that it is not bound to any single network since it is after all the world’s first truly ‘free’ phone.
When I say free I mean in terms of flexibility, the phone itself will cost $350 and can be ordered form the OpenMoko website when it releases March 11th.
Preliminary Tech Specs are as Follows:
120.7 x 62 x 18.5 (mm)
2.8" VGA (480x640) TFT Screen
Samsung s3c2410 SoC
Global Locate AGPS chip
Ti GPRS (2.5G not EDGE)
Unpowered USB 1.1
Touchscreen
micro-sd slot
2.5mm audio jack
2 buttons
1200 mAh battery (charged over USB)
128 MB SDRAM
64 MB NAND Flash
