VoIP for Nokia N80
November 29th 2006 08:56
Voice over IP (or VoIP) is a relatively old (read that? ‘Relatively old’) internet technology where put simply telephone calls are made on the cheap.
The ‘Nokia N80 Internet Edition’ now supports Gizmo’s VoIP software which can be downloaded for free to eligible customers. Through it users can make cheap VoIP calls over the internet through their mobile phones.
Making calls using VoIP software should be no more difficult than a regular call. The difference is that the call will go through a wireless LAN (provided one is available) rather than the regular service provider. Pending the cost of the internet connection the call may end up being vastly cheaper than if it should have gone through a regular carrier.
Regular PC’s already support VoIP, even Gizmo’s VoIP software. At a small charge you can make VoIP phone calls to any phone on the planet. While mobile internet isn’t quite yet mature when it does become cheap enough we can expect service providers to restructure their planning on mobile phones.
This may be the beginning of the end of Mobile Phones, no more will they be phones if this technology is integrated into them and made more readily accessible so much so they will be portable miniature PC’s.
