Linux is Unix in a new Package?

May 3rd 2008 07:14
Troubled software maker SCO's chief executive has claimed the Linux operating system includes Unix source code, during a court case in which Novell is suing SCO for royalties on Unix.

In the hearing, which concludes on Friday, SCO chief executive Darl McBride made claims--including that "Linux is a copy of Unix"--which are directly contradicted by the open-source community and apparently run counter to other SCO testimony, according to trial watchers, including Ars Technica.

SCO sued IBM in 2003, claiming that the IT giant had used copyright code from the Unix operating system which SCO sold, and later extended this suit to other Linux vendors. However, last August, Judge Dale Kimball ruled that Novell, not SCO, owns Unix. A four-day court case is now determining Novell's claim for up to $20 million in royalties from SCO, which declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year.

Sounds more like desperation.

Linux is Begging You To Install It

Firefox Safari Internet Explorer
One argument against Microsoft based software is that they are less 'secure'. Now personally I don't understand the concept of software being less secure, if you're not doing anything stupid you probably won't have to deal with anything nasty.

Having said that I think it is becoming more and more obvious, if Microsoft’s software was ever less secure it was not because of poor software practices but rather the obscurity of its competitors. Unfortunately for the open source community they can no longer just talk as such software as Firefox becomes more and more mainstream.

Now after years of learning from mistakes Microsoft seems to have created a fairly solid package, there is yet to be a major security breach for any of Microsoft’s newer software and all the while the security holes in competing software such as Firefox and Safari to Microsoft's Internet Explorer keep adding and adding.

Many people are switching from Internet Explorer to alternative browsers such as Firefox and Safari. Though that might make them feel more secure, the shift has also opened new doors for bad guys.

Case in point: We have no IE bugs to report this month, but both Firefox and Safari have been hit hard.

Hackers Focus Efforts on Firefox, Safari

Something tells me lots of hobbyist Firefox/Safari fanboy hackers are going to go hard after Internet Explorer to even things up before the month is out. But we'll see.

In a quest to take over the world Google is now working on a universal operating system for smart phones to compete directly with Windows Mobile and the Symbian OS. At its heart the OS, dubbed 'Android', is a re-tooled Linux designed specifically for mobilephones.

Earlier on I elaborated on what I believed was a conspiracy against Microsoft through a veil known as 'The EU'. I retract that prior statement, or at least a part of it, the open source community seems to have nothing to do with this conspiracy because now, suddenly, out of no where, the EU says the open source community should pay Microsoft for alleged software patents the software giant is holding.

The natural question is, WHAT THE HELL? What software patents? They are so vague you'd have to have the imagination of Shayamalan to pull off a ripper of a twist that would even vaguely apply to any individual alleged infringment

*Note: No I'm not going to be professing my love for open source and the following it by 'except I just wish... yadayadayada'. I don't 'love' open source, I like it, but it isn't something I'm going to die for. Let it be known I'll criticize it (or the community behind it in this case) with no remorse and no apologising.

So, what happens when a new Ubuntu is released? You get blogs, websites, magazines and various other media proclaiming such things as 'A Vista Killer at last - new Ubuntu!' or 'Ubuntu is now finally out of the woods and ready to compete with Windows!' amongst other things

Lina is an open source virtual layer that allows programs compiled in Linux to run on other operating systems (including Windows). It is basically an abstraction layer that takes in the linux calls and converts them to their host operating system counter part.

It's cool because it can provide for true cross platform software without the need for recompiling with minor (or major) modifications to existing code. It's even cooler because if it does a 180 and starts getting Windows applications to run on Linux (with minimal developer head aches) it would finally be a step in the right direction in turning Linux into a viable competitor against the likes of Windows and OS X

Tux Speaks Truth About Why No One Uses Linux
"They Hate Us For Our Freedom"
Another one of those ranting and raving type things, it doesn't go anywhere but does show how the typical Linux hugging moron thinks. The problem is that Linux fanboys think that everyone is just like them, that everyone wants 'freedom' and that everyone wants 'full control' of their source code, none of which they can even begin to understand but thats not the point.

Free is good, it's brilliant, but usablity is important too. There is no use beating around the bush pretending eveyrone is just like you, because, to put it quite bluntly, Linux users are in a very small minority

Firefox is Proof Open Source is Failing

September 16th 2007 09:12
The general consensus is that the open source isn't gaining traction is because Microsoft is doing what it needs to from a business standpoint to buy out/take hostage the consumer. However the massive popularity of Firefox is proof enough that this simply can't be the case.

When it comes down to it all you just have to look at it in perspective. Every Windows machine ships with a copy of Internet Explorer for free, yet consumers are actively finding and download Firefox. What of Word Processing software? People pay money for Microsoft Office, and it sure isn't cheap, it doesn't even necessarily come with every Windows PC and additional components will invariably cost more (such as Excel, PowerPoint, etc

I find it strange how Microsoft’s bid to create a new standard for document formats is causing the Open Source community to respond with empty claims and false accusations. It sure isn’t that different to how Microsoft was acting not too long ago in regards to supposed Linux patent violations.

So what is OOXML? For the uninitiated it is a set of standards set up by Microsoft to allow documents to be portable across the board of software. It’s nothing new, even Open Office has had its document type standardized by the ISO

The recent story (submitted to Digg) made quite a bit of headway all over the internets, suddenly people were getting fired for recommending open source software by spoiled teachers who don't care about their students wellbeing. I emailed the writer of that same article to ask if Curtis Mason was really fired for recommending Linux. The reply confirmed my suspicion,

Ahmed - I do not have any evidence that Mason was fired because of the Linux switchover and I don't think that is the case. I am going to get a copy of the tech audit today, which was done by someone who works with Linux. That will provide more details.

Republicans are Luddites

March 1st 2007 00:37
In their blind hate our good friend the neo-conservatives want to stop the distribution of Linux. While I understand she isn’t speaking on behalf of all republicans I am more or less inclined to assume she does, given Republicans have made crazier claims in the past.

So Tristan, Linux is the axis of evil, it is home to many a communist ideals such as working for free to distribute something to the entire planet
