Playstation 3 price slashed!

September 22nd 2006 05:53
After the news of the Playstation 3 retailing in Australian markets for $1000 AUD and overseas for something around $600 US and Microsoft’s recent unveilings at the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) which represents Sony’s core market in Japan it seems Sony has finally bit the bullet and cut down the price of the Playstation 3’s launch... in Japan at least (well it’s a start!).

Recently Microsoft went on a full blown assault at the TGS to ram the Xbox 360 down the Japanese markets throat. Microsoft has definitely not had the best of luck in Japan up until now being outsold by everything from the GameCube to the Playstation 2 to the Game and Watch (if it were still on sale).

Blue Dragon
Blue Dragon is perhaps Microsofts key to the Japanese market
However Microsoft has revealed that it has teamed up with Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the ever popular Final Fantasy series, to create two exclusive titles for the Xbox 360, the first being 'Blue Dragon'. If the Japanese market was only allowed one game either Final Fantasy or Legend of Zelda would be it. As such Hironobu Sakaguchi will be a powerful ally to Microsoft in their attempts to woo the Japanese market.

On top of that Microsoft is going to update the Xbox 360 firmware (via download pending you have Xbox Live) so the console can support 1080p HDTV resolution, one of the hyped features of the Playstation 3.

Playstation 3
Will the price slash save it?
Sony probably more from desperation than anything else has cut down the price of the basic Playstation 3 to $530 AUD ($400 USD). The basic Playstation 3 is probably fairly comparable with the premium Xbox 360 package as it comes with a hard drive built in, however it has the advantage of having the Blu-Ray player built in wherein the Xbox 360 will have that as an add on to be released at a later date. The ‘basic’ Playstation 3 is in fact a better deal than the Xbox 360 premium package especially with the recent price cut making it the same price range as the ‘core’ Xbox 360 package which lacks a hard drive as well as the HD-player.

Unfortunately as of writing the price slash is only confirmed for Japan and we are still waiting to see if Sony is going to treat the rest of the planet like Neanderthals and expect us to cough up the big bucks for their console.

I've been looking forward to the PS3 coming out for ages, mainly as I'm addicted to the GTA series But then I saw the price. The naff one is retailing at about £425. The good one is retailing at about £549. For that price I could buy a car and go on a rampage of my own. I could probably even pay my bail when I get arrested.

Giraffe Boy, thats a brilliant thing you just said.

Brilliant, I mean... so perfect and elequoent, people get paid to write stuff like that and they don't come up with stuff that good.
