Playstation 3 VS Playstation 2
November 23rd 2006 07:57
With all the crazy ‘Xbox 360 VS PlayStation 3’ comparisons going on no one seems to have bothered comparing the Playstation 3 launch titles to previous generation games.
Many people camped out for just a chance to get a Playstation 3, just the chance, they got soaking wet, cold and annoyed, and for what? I decided to find out.
‘Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire’ (admittedly) lack lustre Playstation 3 launch title was the Playstation 3 game I chose simply so I could compare it to a mid generation Playstation 2 game ‘Transformers’.
Number crunching the Playstation 3 might be good at, and I wouldn’t be surprised if far more numbers are crunched with ‘Crossfire’ than with ‘Transformers’, but ‘Transformers’ has something ‘Crossfire’ doesn’t, good artistic design.
Looking at the screenshots I should warn you, ‘Crossfire’ runs in HD, I have taken portions of in game screenshots and shrunk them so they are roughly half size, everything else remains untouched, including the ‘Transformer’ screens.
Just looking at those screenshots it would be euphemism to say that ‘Crossfire’ is ‘Transformers’ with HD, it is bloody worse than ‘Transformers’ with HD thrown in. Sorry to say, but good artistic design simply out does processing power, and this is a prime example of what not to do when you have access to the most powerful gaming console on the market.

The main environment in Crossfire seems to be desert land, the main environment in transformers is forests as such they literally are being compared on artistic merit.
The first screenshot shows the distant view from the perspective of a transformer and that of a gundam.
The second screenshot shows a gundam and trnasformer upclose, I don't see anything wrong wtih that
The third screenshot may be the most misleading as it is an upclose of a gundam and a more general view of a transformer.
This is a first gen game, I even said it was a lacklustre launch title, and I stated I was comparing it to a mid generation ps2 title on top of the disclaimer.
I did my best to be unbiased, I even put that disclaimer up, 'Crossfire' has recieved a lot of criticism for its shoddy graphics and these screenshots kind of prove it.
Honestly, putting th entire screenshot up won't make a difference in my opinion, I did my 100% best not to be biased against sony, but if that is what it comes off as, then I'm sorry, but I don't think it is.
I know ps3 games will look better as time goes on, but right now, this is how good this game looks, will it get better in the near future? Definately will.
