People often claim the internets only real purpose is to be a high-speed porn exchange network... and in a sense that's true.
However one must look at the internet in its broadest sense, it in fact is simply a data exchange network that has been exploited badly in a myriad of different ways, one way is to (admittedly) get easy access to pornography. However another aspect of it (which is just as important) is to mess around and waste time.
