Hewlett Packard’s new Quad Core computers
November 14th 2006 12:18
Hewlett Packard has announced a new line up of workstations based on Quad Core CPU’s at QuadFest. There was (is) dual core, now it has been stepped up to quad, so it was two now it's four, one can assume it’ll be eight, or if computers are anything to by, sixteen within a year and a half (note my technopotomistic post a while back).
Quad Core CPU’s are more powerful, use less power and produce less heat than other CPU’s… which have fewer cores.
In reality quad core CPU’s are over kill for the average Joe, but not for those who work in computer aided design (CAD), such as architects or people who work in computer Special FX, oil exploration etc. In fact most software the average guys uses, if not all, isn’t even optimized to use dual core let alone quad core technology. Heck, even HP realizes this which is why it is first putting those new CPU’s into its workstation line up.
The starting recommended price of these new workstations is US $2,349. The mainstream version of the CPU, that is, ‘as is’, is sold for approximately $1000 USD, so you know where most of the cost is going to in these new workstations.
Most people looking to benefit most from CPU’s with more than one core need not look further away than the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360, both those consoles utilize their multi-core CPU’s for what multi-core CPU’s are truly good for, playing games.
