Robotic Arm For People Missing Limbs

March 10th 2007 13:39
Everyone knew this would happen one day, but it sure happened sooner than I expected. The mechanical arm was Invented by Dean Kamen, who has also created the iBOT. He claims to be 'married to his inventions' and as such is not married to a woman. Sorry ladies.

This robotic arm is probably the coolest thing he's ever come up with.

He lives on an Island that he also happens to own and has declared it himself to be an independent state. There is a stone henge setup as well as a windmill, once an amphibious vehicle was seen parked on his little island.

Very cool. It's a great advancement for electronics/technology/roboti cs, but just imagine the difference it would make in a person's life who really needs that mobility!

I think having his own island and being married to his work is cool.

Cool? I know I'd be swooning over him if I was a girl...

Well, he is swoonable material, especially with that whole stonehenge thing... but I try not to swoon, especially over those well out of my realm.

fair enough... that explains a lot of things actually.

It does bring about an interesting question of what we consider "within our realm". What I meant was that obviously the guy doesn't want to be a chick magnet, or he'd not have isolated himself on an island. But I also know that I wouldn't have much to offer a person of his calibur... while he's inventing robotic arms, I'd be playing SIMS or writing about the faerie folks! Swooning would do neither of us any good.

I was walking through one of the major hotels in Vegas one day on my way to a meeting. Behind me, I could hear two gentlemen (very close behind me) discussing my physical form and appearance, and then one of the guys blurted out in a semi-angry tone, "Don't even bother, man... a girl like that wouldn't even give a guy like you the time of day."

I turned around, glanced at my watch, smiled, said "1:42 p.m." and kept walking, somewhat angry that I had been grouped into a category of "girls like that", and yet, semi-flattered all at the same time.

I guess we all seek out partners who are in a league of our own, but how and why are we defining what's within our reach or beyond it?

I'm sure that's not where you intended this thread to go, but I ran with it. Sorry. *LOL*

Nah thats OK, it's a crime to keep a discussion from prospering.

Feeling flattered isn't the same as feeling like you belong or don't, I mean you can be the hottest thing ever and everyone can say how good you look, but if you don't have a brain no one within the realm of 'brains' will like you.

I think it's all about compromise in most cases, can't have the brightest and cutest girl (believe me, I know).

So umm, yeah, life's a big exclusive club, just gotta find your seat.

I like the way you think.

I wonder if the arm is actually strictly limited to those who need it... how about someone who simply wants to emulate Doc Octopus?

hmm, interesting question Francis, if it works as an extension to your arm where it is cut off then probably not...
