Will the Sequel *be* the exclusive?
What makes an exclusive? Lots of money. If a title releases on a single console it will have a smaller install base, the idea is that the console manufacturer will subsidize the developer for lost sales if it were multiplatform.

With the small install base of the Playstation 3 it is apparent that Sony will have to make huge payouts for exclusive titles, such as the case in Resistance Fall of Man where 30 million dollars was invested in Insomniac to develop the game for the Playstation 3.

Recently at the GDC it seems like Sony is making up for all its recent crap PR, with Ken Kutaragi out of the way of course. Phil Harrison made mention that he doesn’t “think PS3 has the install base to support Rockstar's investment in GTA IV on its own" and went on to say that if the Playstation 3 install base was large enough it would be easier (i.e. cheaper) to nab exclusives from third parties.

The only question is, will the Playstation 3 install base be large enough to get GTA 5 as an exclusive or will the Xbox 360 be sufficiently ahead of the Playstation 3 to make it more worthwhile for Rockstar to make it an Xbox 360 exclusive. If GTA 5 will be a Playstation 3 exclusive and the install base for the Playstation 3 is still smaller than that of the Xbox 360 it would be cheaper for Microsoft to nab that exclusive.

Black Xbox 360 Console
This could be big, yes, it could be huge, apparently Myer (terrible retail chain) has been told by Microsoft to make way for a black Xbox 360 (black controller included) and a 120gb hard drive to come around April, probably to offset Playstation 3 sales.

The new black console is set to be priced at $750 AUD, $100 cheaper than the 20gigabyte Playstation 3 and $250 less than the premium 60 gigabyte Playstation 3.

Please note the source of this information has been only identified as ‘source’, my only belief in its credibility is that the original source I received this news from claimed it was from a ‘store called Myer’, cleverly orchestrated so that one would assume this ‘source’ had no idea about one of Australia’s most popular market chains?

So is anyone here willing to chip in for me to get one of these black boxes? … Please?

What N-Gage 2 Needs

February 7th 2007 07:47
N-Gage 2 prototype
N-Gage 2 Prototype?
The original N-Gage was (is) one of the biggest flops in gaming history, basically it demonstrated why it was foolish to try to push technology further than it can go for a certain time period.

So it is a little crazy reading about rumours of an N-Gage 2, complete with a proto-type photograph. Still, if lessons are learned (N-Gage name dumped) I think the N-Gage 2 could do heaps better than the first.

What does the next-gen N-Gage need to keep it from being a poor seller and really take it up to the big guns, Nintendo and to a lesser extent Sony.

In no particular order:

Exceptional Online Connectivity: Given the N-Gage is a mobile phone it could use 3G technology to really push online gaming, unlike the Nintendo DS or PSP it would not require to be in the range of a Wi-Fi hotspot rather it could connect directly to a 3G carrier. Make it so you can download games direct from developers as well, remember, you are creating a mobile phone so the connectivity it has is an inherent advantage. My ultimate dream is for an Xbox Live type system, heck, I’d say go nuts and copy Xbox Live, put as much ‘Live’ into that little package as you possibly can.

Two Analogue Sticks: Lets face it, Nintendo got really lucky with the DS touch screen and Sony really stuffed up by only including a single analogue stick. Given that a touch screen for gaming will not help the N-Gage sell since the DS has been on market for so long it could benefit from two separate analogue sticks so that it would have a one up advantage on the PSP controls wise.

Sleeker Design: Please, no more taco’s, I know it’s asking for a lot to have two analogue sticks to be pressed against your face while still feeling comfortable and cool looking, but you are the ones trying to create a half-way decent mobile phone/portable gaming device hybrid.

Not *Too* Expensive: Don’t go the original N-Gage route by squeezing too much into a small package selling it for a fortune and expecting people to cough out.

Don’t Call it The ‘M-Gage’: Something more mainstream, don’t go for ‘N-Gage 2’ or ‘N-Gage 360’ or ‘M-Gage’, scrap that naming scheme, something more marketable.

Get Some Publisher Lov’n: Get more publishers, get companies that develop games for mobile phones to create exclusive content for the N-Gage 2.

I guess I’m basically asking for the N-Gage 2 to be nothing like the original N-Gage, at least if Nokia learned anything from the original is that they should never repeat it.

Casamassina, No You Didn’t!

January 5th 2007 07:55
Matt Casamassina of IGN.com has claimed that he played a Nintendo DS version of Halo. He provides no evidence, the only thing he does provide is a silly mock up photograph of a Nintendo DS with Halo running on it and claiming that it looked very much like the DS game.

Halo 3 DS port running on Nintendo DS Mock up real

MGS4
"Gah, this is so confusing, can't they just get the game done already!?
Looks like contrary to earlier news it appears Konami has stepped up and stated that Metal Gear Solid 4 is still a Playstation 3 exclusive.

Could this be true? Will Xbox 360 owners never get their chance to play Metal Gear Solid 4 on their fave console? I think Konami is holding its horses to see how well the Playstation 3 exclusive will sell, if not satisfied with the results I’m sure their ‘plan b’ involves ports

Snake is reflecting these new developments
What’s happening over at Sony HQ? Next to Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid is the biggest title for the Playstation 3! Imagine if Microsoft lost ‘Gears of War’ to Sony, this is how bad it is!

‘Metal Gear Solid 4’ was an extremely high profile exclusive game for the Playstation 3, it was expected to be one of the first ‘killer apps’ of the Playstation 3
