SIXAXIS May Get Rumble

December 17th 2006 13:44
Theres still hope that she'll tilt and rumble...
Sony is not willing to pay royalties to immersions for its ill-gotten rumble patent to give the Playstation 3 controller (called SIXAXIS) rumble, but third parties might.

Hori, a Japanese based company is a company well known for its third party accessories it has developed for the Playstation is keen to give the idea of a rumble enabled SIXAXIS controller a spin.

They stated “We have some ideas. However, we'd need cooperation from software makers” naturally for rumble to work in these hypothetical SIXAXIS controllers the game would also need to support it.

Given Hori is a Japanese based company we should expect most games that use Hori brand rumble enabled controllers to be from Japanese developers.

Sooo the controller won't be doing the cha cha anymore?

So you're saying that Sony doesn't actually own the rumble technology (as in their technicians didn't build it, or Sony hasn't bought it outright off some other company) at all? I thought it was an exclusive Sony thing, like the Nintendo to Mario and Golden Axe to Sega.
It's a shame the ps3 doesn't rumble. After awhile you get used to it and not having it will feel odd.

The original PS rumbling was lame... it felt so forced... I'd get kicked in the head in a fighting game then RUMBLE! Oh no!

Technically nintendo invented the concept of rumble, they then enhanced it with the gamecube, the ps2 rumble and xbox rumble are different technologies to nintendo's and immersion decided to patent the kind of rumble both the ps2 and xbox use and sue them.

Microsoft bought part of Immersion while sony decided to fight in court, and lost. So if they were to put rumble in the ps3 controller they'd end up paying royalties to Immersion, hence Microsoft.

Hey Ahmed,

So what is rumble? I'm guessing it makes the controller shake? to make the game seem more real?

I dunno if it makes the games seem more real, but yeah, it just makes the controller do the cha cha...
