Borat to Visit the International Space Station
November 5th 2006 21:40
Well not quite, but he just as well might grab some tickets to the international space station in light of these recent developments. Yes, you read right, one of the pioneering space tourism programs has set up shop in… Iran.
While here in Australia for instance we are still complaining about our slow internet connection speeds, up in Iran of all places, a woman of all genders (of which two exist in fact) gets to go to space.
Those are two things you wouldn’t expect from a fundamentalist, back warded country, first a woman doing something cool in this country, and the second something cool happening there at all!
American-Iranian is (was) the lucky gal to be launched up into space, and hopefully will be lucky enough to have a safe landing.
Jam-e-Jam, a popular state run newspaper published a column dedicated to this person with a photograph of her. The kicker is she wasn’t even wearing a veil, which is obligatory on women in Iran.
Young women in Iran see it as amazing and are already going on and on about how she is their role model, while the women’s rights organizations are not supporting her. Why not? To add some controversy of course!
"What she did was great, but they (feminist organizations) decided to distance themselves from her because of the way the Islamic Republic proclaimed her," said feminist film maker Mahnaz Mohammadi.
I really honestly don’t know what’s wrong with the feminists here, just exactly what are they looking for? Women’s rights or revenge? One can only conclude from the reaction of these feminists is that they have their ‘time of the month’ simultaneously at that same day. There is no other substantial explanation for their lacking of support of these developments. Period.
Is this progress or not in this fundamental state? Well I think more than anything it is shame upon the western world that a fundamentalist state like Iran can consent to putting women into space while in other more developed countries legal battles about the temperature of coffee are being waged.
