Super Communist Mario

Super Communist Mario
Back during the days when Nintendo was just settling into America and the world was not *quite* over the communist scare there came a happy little Italian Plumber. He wore red and flew a flag with a red star on it. He was Mario. He was commie.

Reading this article on Mario's alleged ties with communism I can't help but wonder if the writer is joking, sadly that probably isn't the case.

To understand just how crazy and delusional the writer must be I present a passage from the article,

Why then, as their flagship hero, does Nintendo choose an overweight, big nosed plumber with an ungainly mustache and ridiculous suspenders? Why was this, the most unlikely heroic figure, chosen? Unusual yes…but deliberate? Looking at the evidence in light of this new Communist hidden agenda, the answer for this mystery is obvious. Mario, and his short-lived brother, are none other than cartoon representations of Joseph Stalin. Stalin was Russia's amicus humani, amor patriae or communist super man. So could this "super" Mario represent another "super" man? Well, that is for you to decide.

It's interesting how creativity works. Mario and his brother, Luigi are Italian American plumbers. Originally Mario was known as 'Jumpman' as he featured in his first game 'Donkey Kong'. What of his name? Well funny story actually, Mario was named after Mario Segale, the landlord of Nintendo of America’s office, who barged in on a company meeting demanding an overdue rent.

Why does he have a mustache and oversized nose and is overweight? Probably a combination of creativity and technical limitations, the mustache I know was used to cover up his mouth since the Nintendo couldn't show the mouth with any sort of clarity. If you look carefully he doesn't have a mouth. Take what you want from it.

It's a pity Fox News never really got a chance to spin the hell out of the story, it would have been facinating to see the flag wavers of our time trying to pin Mario on terrorism or something.

The following animation aptly sums up Mario in my eyes and the eyes of millions and millions of people around the world,

Damn and all this time I thought that he was just a token illegal migrant for the game industry.

Being Stalin makes him less dangerous.

Wow, interesting post! Have you ever tried Ghost Recon?? I was hooked on that for a while. It didn't do a lot for U.S./North Korean relations!

Damo, he could be both, you never know, he's also been accused by PETA for abusing animal rights.

James, I've played Ghost Recon, great game, I guess it's just irony the French made the game?

I think you're right, they weren't joking. Funny, yet sad. I wouldn't be surprised if the scare descpription wasn't "updated" to make him, as Damo eluded to, an illegal immigrant, or perhpas an Iranian.

Ahmed,

I didn't know that. I know I have played it using the different languages--no wonder French one of them!

Jeff, I hope it does get updated because the video I've embedded from YouTube was inspired by the accusations Mario is a communist influence, I'm sure there will be other videos in response to other crazy accusations against the Italian American plumber we all know and love.

James, well French is a pretty popular language so many games have the option for French text/sounds. I do know that Ghost Recon was developed by Red Storm under Ubisoft which is a French company. *But* Red Strom itself is based in America - so it looks like it's some conspiracy by the French/Americans to invade North Korea?
