The Trojan War and Game Consoles
November 29th 2006 13:54
Imagine the console wars is the Trojan wars. We have Microsoft (Paris) hiding from the relatively safe position of Troy while Sony (we’ll assume Sony is Menelaus) amasses a massive army from various nations (notably, nVidia, IBM and Toshiba) to take the city of Troy, the Army is led by SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment) AKA Achilles.
Sure, it looks to be relatively safe for the well defended and well entrenched Microsoft, but even as we speak the citizens of Troy are somewhat fearful of what Sony (Menelaus) might have at its disposal yet somewhat skeptical that it might all be a bluff, and still remains loyal to Menelaus (Microsoft) and have faith in his (its) strength.
But why is Sony (Menelaus) doing this? Well Microsoft (Paris) kind of wants HD-DVD to succeed while Sony (Menelaus) wants Blu-Ray to be the dominant format (so in essence, Helen is the format war, whoever wins, takes home the prize).
Sony (Menelaus) wants Helen of format wars badly, or more like wants to destroy everything Microsoft (Paris) owns, from its operating system to the Xbox 360 to the format it is backing (we’ll assume all of this is the city of Troy) for stealing his girl (granted, in this case Microsoft (Paris) is trying to steal Sony’s (Menelaus) girl). So really Sony (Menelaus) is over Helen of format wars, it (he) just wants revenge.
Just to explain what I mean, Sony execs say the Playstation 4 might not even have an optical disk drive. They themselves believe it will be over for optical disk drives, Blu-Ray or otherwise, in five to seven years, they’re just looking for a skirmish like victory here.
Even as SCE (Achilles) prepares to attack Microsoft, Sony (Menelaus) knows (or believes) that destroying Microsoft (killing Paris) and winning back Helen of format wars is kind of futile, and knows full well it doesn’t have much to gain out of winning or losing this war. Sony (Menelaus) is planning on killing off Blu-Ray (Helen of format wars) soon afterwards anyway.
So it really is just an exercise to destroy an enemy of Sony (Menelaus). Sony (Menelaus) isn’t too concerned about Helen of format wars (Blu-Ray), she never was really on the agenda, Sony (Menelaus) is just doing it to show it can and is using SCE (Achilles) to do so.
The war is fought, bitter it is, but inevitably it appears SCE (Achilles) has lost and given up. SCE (Achilles), despite its (his) powers, couldn’t make a profit from the Playstation 3
Just a side note, one analyst thinks Sony will have to sell thirty games per console to profit from it directly.
So SCE (Achilles), down to almost nothingness, its support dwindling, even by what was once its (his) own greatest allies retreats, leaving back the Trojan Horse (the discontinued Playstation 3 consoles).
Citizens of Troy (we’ll call them Microsoft fanboys) rejoice and take home the prize, the Trojan horse (the few remaining discontinued Playstation 3 consoles). Later that night it turns out a few of SCE’s soldiers along with a bit of aid from SCE (Achilles) itself (himself) have been hiding inside the Trojan Horse, they stealthily slip out and ravage the city of Troy from the inside. Turns out while few in numbers they had the advantage of slipping in, the Playstation 3 (Trojan horse) was their cover and they were literally invited by the enemy.
Simply put, Blu-Ray had slipped into their homes, the format won.
Alas, the war was over, Helen of format wars was inevitably caught by Sony (Menelaus) who demanded it (he) should be allowed to finish Helen of format wars off. However, the beauty of Helen of format wars won Sony (Menelaus) over and so the Blu-Ray format (which is now plain old Helen without the wars part) lived on until the end of its life with Sony at its (her) side.
Oh, SCE (Achilles) was finished (killed) by Microsoft (Paris) which (who) otherwise a coward managed to blindly fire an arrow (Xbox 360) into Achilles’ one weak spot, the heal (AKA the Australian and European markets who aren’t getting any Playstation 3’s until 2007!).

I love it! Excellent work.
So Wii is kind of a Switzerland? Doing their own thing and hoping to inadvertantly make a profit out of the war.
