"The Unauthorized History of Myspace.com"

June 14th 2007 13:35
This documentary pretty much speaks for itself.

Whats scary is the size of MySpace, huge, with no real purpouse besides 'social networking'. Where do the profits come from? Ads of course, but when you are running a service built on top of a userbase that knows little to nothing about computer software they can easily be exploited via malware.

Interesting watch - thanks for finding this Ahmed.

Have there been any cases of malware originating from MySpace?

I can see the link being made to the past history of EUniverse and IntermixMedia, but is the potential for malware the issue here, or the fact that MySpace positioned itself as an underdog, when really it wasn't?

What's the problem here?

Well the real problem is that myspace is trying to turn into a self sustaining system by which to control all social interactions on the internet.

Besides their repeated attempts at blocking out competitors (I think they've finally blocked youtube, they've definitely blocked photobucket) they are also releasing services to counter competitors, for instance they've actually launched a Digg clone (of all things).

It's like Microsoft, they got to the top cheating, now they're on top they're playing dirty to get more power.

Of course if they do become the only social networking site online worth noting sometime in the future whats stopping them from goinga head and installing malware on peoples PCs?

That is essentially the holy grail for any software company, to be able to install malware and get away with it. MySpaces history is indicating thats where they want to head off to, will they? When corporations rule the world, which they already do.

Interesting. It will be very interesting to see what happens here. It seems like something major happens every couple of years with MySpace.

I wish I could start some silly little site and take over the world. I mean, it's a rubbish site (that doesn't stop me being on it... :-/ ), and it's making filthy lucre...

Oh well, back to the drawing board...

Yeah it's difficult for anyone to understand, the perception of it having any use seems to be the main drawing point. There are better alternatives, actually, such as Friendster and Facebook but Myspace with it's dody design, shady history and all that seems to be playing number 1.

Verrry interesting..thanks for posting this, Ahmed.

My band's on Myspace; I give the link to potential customers so they can hear us. Otherwise I never go there--yet, as was pointed out--I get a load of friend invites every month from people I don't know.

Hum.

D.
