Top Ten Good Guys of Videogames 2006
December 23rd 2006 16:19
All contestants have featured in a game that was released in 2006 and have featured in games that have actually made some critical and commercial success so sadly we won’t be seeing Master Chief on these lists.
It is strange who came out number one, I can’t say if it is coincidence or destiny... who knows? Suffice to say number one is kind of a surprise twist that makes you think 'gee I should have seen that cheap shot coming'...
10) Nathan Hale
Not to spoil the game he stars in but Nathan Hale probably keeps to the old adage ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. Seriously, I can’t say why he cut it in the top ten list because it will ruin a great chunk of the storyline behind Resistance: Fall of Man.
9) Samus Aran/Lara Croft
Both these ladies (using the term loosely) have a lot in common. They are both bounty hunters, they travel to exotic locales kill bad guys and retrieve items of great value. Thankfully Lara Croft’s latest outing was better than her last as she was back where we wanted her to be, exploring tombs, meanwhile Samus was doing what she’s good at doing, exploring derelict habitats.
8) The Elite Beat Agents
There's something about their dancing that screams Blues Brothers, yet another part makes you think they are more like the Men in Black, either way they know how to save the day and they do it with style. You can’t really ask for more than that.
7) Daxter
Usually playing side kick on the home front (AKA Playstaiton 2) Daxter was finally given a chance to shine with a portable outing of his own this year and shine he did proving to the world he can be more than just a side kick.
6) Marcus Fenix
The star of the first real killer app of the Xbox 360 Marcus Fenix is still no more than the regular ‘look at how tough I am’ guy you get in countless B-Grade sci-fi movies and we love him for it.
5) Mario
Back to the future it is with Mario who features in an original side scrolling platformer. Nothings changed about Mario, still fat and getting fatter, still jumping high and still stomping goomba’s flat. Welcome back Mario.
4) The Elebits
Are they villainous or not? Well far as I’m concerned they are heroes. In a world where Thomas Edison was a redundant figure lived the Elebits, cute cuddly little critters that make electricity. ‘Nuff said really.
3) Snake
Tough as nails snake showed up twice this year with the award winning Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, both times he kicked ass. Snake is that kind of guy you look at and you can tell is tough, he’s original and unique, draws no parallels with other figures, in essence Snake is a definition of himself.
2) Link
Not only is Link the star of what is the biggest launch title in gaming history (only second to Super Mario 64) but he has a rich heritage stemming back all the way to when most of us kids picked up our first Nintendo controllers. He’s been with us from the start and Miyamoto has brought him back again.
1) Mii
Mii, yes Mii! Out doing the veterans of gaming the Mii’s have come out of nowhere to claim top spot. This draws scary parallels with Time magazines person of the year for 2006, maybe it’s a sign... or maybe the folks at Time magazine have been playing with their Wii too long, either way the Mii’s are probably the most innovative and coolest videogame characters of 2006 and possibly of all time.
