Imagine you have this terrible itch that won't go away, one thats driving you nuts, yet your hands are preoccupied trying to kill the mosquito that inflicted you with that itch. For Sony, the fly is the Playstation 3s poor sales and scratching the itch is getting a good game for the system.

To that end it's no surprise that after shipping off their best bet for a real 'killer app' to retail stores Sony have adopted a... generous marketting strategy, that is 'release the damn game as soon as you have it in stock, don't wait for the release date'.

As frequent Playstation.Blog readers will remember, about two weeks back we announced Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction had gone gold and would ship to stores Oct 30th. Well, due to some unexpected quickness at the factory, a vast majority of retailers have already received the game. With that, some retailers are choosing to release the game next week instead of waiting until the 30th, which we are all too happy to allow .

Source

Factory quickness my ass, Sony just needs to get a good game out to sell some actual hardware, one that can't come soon enough. Ratchet and Clank is no less than the light at the end of Sony's tunnel, at least for now.

The Vii - China's Answer to the Wii

October 14th 2007 03:58
The China Vii is just the latest in copycat technology coming from China. It's a blessing and a curse for China, it's also a good reason why Nintendo and friends don't seem to be as prominant there than they could be. Pity too, considering it's a big as market buying into second rate rip offs.

China's Wii

At least its controller looks alright:

VIA The friggin watermarks.

What about it's games? Well you'd be pleased to know it comes with an assortment of great titles that can be enjoyed by the whole family,

Six Million, Yet I’m Still at Zero

March 22nd 2007 01:53
I expect the demand for the Wii to stay this crazy for at least another twelve months, despite selling a record six million thusfar. It seems like the rabid fanboys are too many, literally can’t find any, the fact it has sold six million in this period of time is nothing short of bloody well annoying for folks like me who do not want to pay a premium to buy it off of eBay.

The success of the Wii is nothing short of darn well annoying. What’s worse is it looks like this sell-out hype behind the Wii is going to continue for a few more million unit shipments. I just wonder when the big guns start coming down the pipe, big guns from the Super Mario franchise or Metriod or Final Fantasy or any number of top secret titles that are in development for the Wii… what then? Will we go back to sell-out hype all over again? Honestly that would kind of suck for me as a person who wants one eventually.

Nintendo Wii’s are Impossible to Find

February 17th 2007 11:35
They are impossible to find, literally impossible, I don’t even see them around, just empty display boxes.

Dick Smith, a popular electronics retailer here in Australia (don’t laugh, they once sold a brand of matches they called ‘DICKHEAD’) which has over 130 stores in Australia have not a single Wii, well they do, they have two or less at one of their stores, that’s it

According to Google trends the Wii is clocking up about ten times more Google searches than ‘Playstation 3’, in other countries like the US of A it is far closer to the Playstation 3 and sometimes is coming a distant second to the Playstation 3.

Sony is Like Saddam Hussein

December 31st 2006 15:37
Saddam Demonstrating his WMD to the world
'My WMD is both big and expensive
It’s all over the place, Sony stuffed up with the Playstation 3 here Sony stuffed up with the Playstation 3 there, naturally everything is filled with hate. But why? Nintendo stuffed up, so did Microsoft, Nintendo released a console with very old graphical horsepower for an inflated price to make profits per console sold, Microsoft rushed their console out and now are planning on releasing improved Xbox 360 units among other things.

Truth is Nintendo and Microsoft have stuffed up a bit too, but why don’t we try to eat at their throats? Because Sony deserves it. Sony is arrogant, obnoxious self righteous, Sony is Saddam Hussein, completely oblivious to the world around him thinking he’s still the dictator of an oppressed people despite failing, continually failing and falling into obscure history

Crucified?

December 23rd 2006 08:16
I don’t know what the equivalent to crucifying a video game console or any electronic brand would be but when they come few and far in between and lack demand you can expect the internet to come up with many and varied examples of it being crucified.

Woot.com has found a particularly creative and excessively insulting way, the picture speaks for itself

Looks like novelties are the new black, people are paying more for them... quite a bit more in fact.

The Nintendo Wii costs $250 brand new from a retailer, the 60gigabyte Playstation 3 costs $600 if you can get your hands on one from a retailer. Also worth mentioning is that there are more than two times the amount of Wii’s than there are Playstation 3’s in the US

Sony Cops a Whopper

December 14th 2006 06:50
Sony, particularly SCE has a habit of inane advertising that makes no sense. From crazy nonsensical TV advertisements for the Playstation 3 to potentially racist billboard ads (I don’t agree, seems to be too much reading *into* here), Sony has it all.

So what is the latest effort? Well Sony desperate to sell the failing PSP inconspicuously launched alliwantforxmasisapsp.com. Oh bravo Sony! That's about as obvious as a rhino in a china shop! Talk about viral marketing, you bring it to new lows

cheesy
Wow, to think these ads actually built hype!
Naysayers will always be naysayers, at first when the Wii was unveiled they said it was too small and had no HD so it was a failure, when the Wii-Mote was unveiled they said it was a gimmick, just like the DS (O_o), when the hype was building they said it would burst like a bubble, when the launch sales rocketed they said it was just early adopters (so-called fanboys), as the sales continue to rocket they claim whatever the hell they want to. But whatever they say, Nintendo will still be laughing all the way to the bank.

Only eight days on the market the Wii has sold 600,000 units, its biggest selling game is (quite predictably) ‘Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess’ with an attachment rate just over 0.75, which means approximately 454,000 units of ‘Twilight Princess’ has been purchased by Wii owners

Playstation 3 Grill

Videogames shall evolve, from the TV to…

September 24th 2006 07:12
Robots! Well it’s the only thing that makes sense. While people think we are going to be glued to our television screens from now until the end of time there is more and more reason why we are moving away, not towards our television screens.

The fact of the matter is in light of Nintendo’s plans and its subsequently overwhelmingly positive response we find that consumers are more into that interactive, rather than visual, edge

Playstation 3 price slashed!

September 22nd 2006 05:53
After the news of the Playstation 3 retailing in Australian markets for $1000 AUD and overseas for something around $600 US and Microsoft’s recent unveilings at the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) which represents Sony’s core market in Japan it seems Sony has finally bit the bullet and cut down the price of the Playstation 3’s launch... in Japan at least (well it’s a start!).

Recently Microsoft went on a full blown assault at the TGS to ram the Xbox 360 down the Japanese markets throat. Microsoft has definitely not had the best of luck in Japan up until now being outsold by everything from the GameCube to the Playstation 2 to the Game and Watch (if it were still on sale

The true Lord of ‘Lord of the Rings’

September 16th 2006 03:57
I find it interesting that mainstream Hollywood movies are losing the big bucks rather quickly. It probably has a lot to do with the fact it has hit a creative vacuum. We were given such great movies of late, some of the best in history, from Star Wars Episode 3 all the way down to Pirates of the Caribbean and everything in between (The Incredibles, Batman and others, I am looking at you). Don’t get me wrong, they are still coming, but it’s all few and far in between.

Superman
Not quite so Super are we?
Now we are being given crap, absolute crap, the best they could do was ‘Superman Returns’, and that was… well not a very good movie (apparently, I haven’t seen it yet). George Lucas himself stated that ‘Mission Impossible 3’ was boring after it reached the top of the box offices around the world. He was right though, on the audiences behalf, as it appears all that box office success centered around the hype behind it as ‘Mission Impossible 3’ lost a lot of its ground come the second week
